Board Members

Boards & Committees Help Make the Foundation Successful in Serving Sunnyside Unified School District students and teachers. The Sunnyside Foundation has been blessed with dedicated volunteers over the years who have given of their time and expertise in assuring that the Foundation fulfills its mission. The Foundation is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors who provide the strategic vision for the organization.

Additionally dedicated volunteers serve on various committees which support organization functions and various programs.

Finance

The Treasurer is chair of the Finance Committee, which includes three other Board members. The Finance Committee is responsible for developing and reviewing:

  • • fiscal procedures for Foundation and Alumni Association
  • • review chart of accounts and update if necessary
  • • identify and create monthly financial reports for submission to the entire board prior to each board meeting
  • • Meet as needed to review annual financial reports
  • • Identify a board member to serve as the Treasurer for the organization


The Board must approve the budget, and all expenditures must be within the budget. Any major change in the budget must be approved by the Board or the Executive Committee. The fiscal year shall be the calendar year. Monthly reports are required to be submitted to the Board showing income, expenditures and pending income. The financial records of the Foundation are public information and shall be made available to the membership, Board members and the public.

Excellence in Education Grants

Work with a committee of board members, student and community volunteers to make preliminary grant selections

  • • Make recommendations to the Board for Grant Awards
  • • Follow up with Grant recipients for awards and follow up letters
  • • Create system for evaluation of grant requests
  • • Update application as needed; communicate with recipients for opportunities to seek grants in action. Track receipt of post grant report.

    Fund Development

    Work with a committee of board members, student and community volunteers to make preliminary grant selections

    • • Work with Executive Director to create annual fund development plan that incorporates individual, corporate and foundation solicitations in addition to special events and grant writing
    • • Identify resources necessary to implement fund development plan including financial
    • • Identify and recruit members of the fund development committee; and other solicitors
    • • Create annual goals and objectives; review annual performance

    Special Events
    • • Identifies possible revenue-producing events
    • • Administers all aspects of events (site, performer, contracts, lodging, silent auction)
    • • Selects and works with an outside special events contractor with approval from the board
    • • Works with the board members to identify and retain sponsors for the event
    • • Creates and monitors budget

    George Celaya

    George is a Financial Advisor for BMO Private Bank. In his current position he services the Tucson and Green Valley region. George provides a comprehensive analysis, implementation of investment choices, estate planning and risk mitigation tailored to client’s needs. George graduated from New Mexico Military Institute, has a Bachelor and a Master’s degree in Business Administration from National University.

    Richard Gonzales
  • Rick is a native Tucsonan and one of the original founding members of the Sunnyside Foundation. He is a 1968 graduate of Sunnyside High School and he received both his undergraduate (’72) and law (’75) degrees from the University of Arizona. Rick started his legal career as an Assistant Pima County Public Defender before joining the Pima County Attorney’s Office as a deputy prosecutor. In 1980, Rick and Stephen Villarreal started the law firm of Gonzales and Villarrreal, P.C. which continues today as the Gonzales Law Firm. www.gonzaleslaw.com.

    Robert Rabago

    Robert is a native Tucsonan and graduated from Sunnyside High School. He got his B.S. in Accounting/General Business from the University of Arizona. Robert retired from the Arizona Air National Guard where he held a civil service position and a military position. Currently he is working as Realtor for Morado Canyon Realty. Robert also serves as the President for Harrison Pointe Home Owners Association.

    Debra Salaiz

    Debra is currently the AMRAAM Program Manager and has responsibility for the overall management and success of this program at Raytheon Missile Systems. She is also the RMS Finance Leadership Development Program (FLDP) Sponsor/Coordinator and the University of Arizona Campus Manager. She is a member of Raytheon’s Finance Learning Council representing Program Controls and the Finance point of contact talent management. Debra attended Pomona College, earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting from the University of La Verne and holds a Masters Degree in Business from the University of Phoenix.

    Taunya Villicana

    A co-founder and managing partner of Affinity Financial Group, LLC, is a native Tucsonan and graduated from Sunnyside High School. Taunya was awarded the Regent’s Scholarship and attended Arizona State University. Taunya holds the following securities licenses: series 7, 65, 63, 31, insurance and is a registered Investment Advisory Representative in several states. Taunya is very involved in the community having served in volunteer roles of various capacities with organizations including the American Red Cross, Arizona Town Hall, Kiwanis de Amigos and the Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. In 2006, Taunya received Tucson Business Edge’s “Top 40 under 40” award that recognizes the up-and-coming business and community leaders under the age of 40.

    Dani DuBois

    Dani DuBois is a graduate of the University of Arizona with a B.A. in Political Science and Juris Doctor Degree from the Rogers College of Law. Currently Dani is Law Clerk/Bailiff to the Honorable Richard S. Fields, Presiding Judge, Criminal Bench. Prior to her current position, Dani was Director, ArizonaMed Curriculum for the University of Arizona, College of Medicine. Dani has received numerous awards including Arizona Attorney General Honors for Outstanding Service on Behalf of Arizona Crime Victims; the George Reynolds Dedicated Service Award, University of Arizona Health Sciences Center; and the College of Medicine Excellence in Innovations Teaching Award. Her interests and community outreach experience includes GaitWay, Primavera Homeless Shelter Legal Clinic, Southern Arizona Chapter, Red Cross Disaster Services and Kiwanis Volunteer for their annual RattleSnake Cross Country run

    Danielle Martinez Brady

    Danielle Martinez Brady is an MBA and a graduate of the University of Arizona majoring in Public Administration. She has twenty-three years of Human Resources experience and is currently at Intuit. Danielle’s past employment history includes Raytheon, Artisoft and Tucson Medical Center. She is passionate of about the success outcomes for Southside youth and has served for over a decade on the YMCA-Mulcahy Branch Board of Directors.

    Naomi Proano

    Naomi Proano is a graduate of Sunnyside High School and the University of Arizona with background in Business Administration and Marketing. She is currently the Community Relations Specialist for Kool Smiles Family Dentistry with special emphasis on Hispanic Market outreach. Prior employment has included Tucson Toros, Clear Channel Communications, Finley Distributing Company and Cactus Broadcasting. Naomi’s board service includes the House of Neighborly Services, Head Start Health Advisory Committee, League of Latin American Women, Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and many more.

    Rick Moreno

    Rick is a native Tucsonan and founding member/past president of the Sunnyside School District Foundation. Rick graduated from Sunnyside High School in 1975 and received his B.A.S. in Fire Service Management from the Arizona State University. Rick retired from the Tucson Airport Fire Department where he held the positions of firefighter, Fire Lieutenant, Fire Captain, and Fire Prevention and Safety Officer after 33 1/2 years of a fire service career. He currently is working at the Sunnyside Unified School District as a fire control technician in charge of all fire prevention activities.
